Addressing the opening:
So some people addressed me using Tom Kane’s voice in the opening. I was trying to homage the “Clone Wars Recap” but on second thought, it came off as really insensitive, especially considering what Tom Kane went through in 2022 as a stroke victim. Really sorry if I overstepped and upset anyone. It was not my intention whatsoever.
Addressing the SA:
Hey everyone. This is obviously a video with a light hearted tone, but I wanna make it clear that this whole situation, despite being blown out of proportion and ridiculous, is an important one.
SA is a very serious and unfortunate topic, and I know not everyone is okay with it being brought up in Star Wars. However, I think it’s relatively integral, especially for something like Star Wars.
SA is unfortunately common enough where it can be traced back to real life wars, and those in a position of power would take advantage of others. It’s sad that something like this is common enough that it has to be addressed.
I don’t think Star Wars needs to address every political and social issue and treat them like boxes on a checklist, but for this specific scenario, it was handled with so much care and thought that I commend Tony Gilroy for including it.
I’m very much against including SA in media, but that is only because 99% of the time, it’s exploitative, handled with little care, and not treated with the respect it deserves. Examples of writers fumbling with this subject matter are 13 Reasons Why, I Spit on Your Grave, Last House on the Left, Rob Zombie’s Firefly Trilogy, Jack Frost (The Horror Movie, not the Michael Keaton movie), etc.
There have been some cases where movies and shows handle SA respectfully, mainly the Boys, but that’s about it.
However, I think the most important thing Andor did was condemn the action (which is obvious), not glorify or fetishize the scene and make it seem “cool” (which unfortunately a lot of movies do with content like this), and not show the scene in detail, which they thankfully didn’t show whatsoever.
I will say, I wish the show included a Content Warning for those who find this subject matter triggering. I’ll admit, I got really anxious at first and I wish I had a moment to prepare beforehand.
If you’re looking for more detail on the matter, I’d recommend looking at Fancy Star Wars’ post on Instagram. She does a very thoughtful job breaking this down and is very unbiased in her review. Also be sure to look at Tony Gilroy’s breakdown of the scene and why he felt a need to include it
