Podlet - Wooden Flower - Basswood Woodturning Project

Hello and welcome to the channel! In this woodworking video I will be turning a wooden flower, also known as a podlet from basswood/Lime/Linden on the woodturning lathe.

Mounted between centres on a drive spur I rounded off the blank and formed a tenon leaving a section of the bark at the end which will become the head of the flower.

Once securely mounted on the tenon I shaped the inside of the flower using a bowl gouge. This was then supported using an old skateboard wheel while I tidied the underside of the flower. Most use a tennis ball for this but the wheel was all I had to hand and it worked well.
I also used a small torch here as a visual indication of how thin the head of the flower was getting while turning.

This wheel was then removed while I sanded then shaped the stem of the flower. Thinning out the stem bit by bit to avoid any stress that may cause it to pop out of the chuck and/or break.

After I had shaped and sanded the piece it was parted off from the lathe, the base was cleaned up on the belt sander before I applied my makers mark and finally a coat of Danish oil to finish.
