Following Fred Donner's exceptionally defended thesis of his 2010 book, early Islam was a religiously pluralistic community comprising Christians, Jews, and what would later be called Muslims. In a recent paper (linked below), the philosopher Joshua Sijuwade poses the philosophical implications this should have for Muslims today.
In this video, I review the evidence I collected in the appendix of "Grace Abounds," which shows how some allegedly authentic (Sahih) hadiths and companion reports teach universal salvation. Assuming their authenticity for the sake of the argument, this data supports Donner's and Sijuwade's thesis; and, importantly, sheds possible light on the salvific pluralistic beliefs of early Muslims. Universalism may very well be a perennial truth across Christianity and Islam.
