Lamps Plus is back with five experts tips to clean your chandelier. Cleaning a chandelier can often be a daunting task as they cannot easily be removed from the ceiling. But performing even a simple dusting can help brighten up your home and bring back that comfortable feeling. Use these five tips to get the job done right.

First off, here are some do's and don'ts when it comes time to clean your chandelier. Avoid using any hard liquid chemicals or cleaners, as they can potentially discolor or damage finishes and fabrics. Also, avoid spinning, twirling, or otherwise putting pressure on your chandelier during the cleaning process. You don't want to risk the installation. Finally, make sure your chandelier is turned off before attempting the cleaning.

When it comes time to clean your chandelier, begin by cleaning the frame first. Before starting, place a towel or drop cloth on the floor beneath your chandelier. This will help catch any dust or drips. Then, use a feather duster to brush away dust, lint or cobwebs. Continue by moistening a clean rag with water, gently cleaning the frame by working your around until you have reached every spot.

There are also some commercial sprays, but it is essential to check and make sure that they are alright to be used on metal finishes.

If your chandelier has any crystals, clean those after you have finished with the frame. Prepare a solution of one part isopropyl alcohol to four parts distilled water in a spray bottle to begin. Then, spray a small amount on a cloth, gently wiping the crystals clean. Try not to spray the crystals directly, as this can just cause a mess instead. We recommend wearing clean, white gloves during this process to avoid fingerprints. To make the cleaning easier, you can also remove the crystals from your chandelier.

Some chandeliers also come with shades, which can be cleaned as well. Use a dry sponge to gently wipe the shade clean, no water or cleaning solutions necessary. For clip shades, we recommend removing them from the fixture to clean. If removing the shade is not an option, do your best to get access to all the way around the shade.

Lastly, there are a few other possible methods besides what we mentioned previously. For some designs, a clean one or two inch paintbrush can be a great tool to remove dust from hard to reach areas. If you have a vacuum with the soft brush attachment, that can also be used. Just be careful when working with sheer shades or glass/crystal pieces.
