7 effects from a flanger, 2 pedals compared. BOSS BF 2 vs MXR M117R

This is a comparison of a 1990 MIJ BOSS BF-2 Flanger and an MXR M117 re-issue. I created seven different flanger sounds to compare the pedals.

The effects created with the flangers are -
1. A chorus effect on an arpeggiated guitar part, varying the RATE.
2. A flanger sweep on a lightly overdriven rhythm guitar part. The overdrive comes from an MXR 'Duke of Tone' placed in front of the flangers. Varying the RATE.
3. A rotary / vibrato effect.
4. A hybrid phaser / flanger effect.
5. The longest, deepest most resonant sweep both flangers can create.
6. A highly resonant filter effect. Much more a special 'effect' than musical.
7. A double tracked guitar effect. Using the flangers to give a lead guitar track a pseudo double tracked guitar sound. Similar to ADT (automatic double tracking)

The results from this comparison were very interesting. As both flangers have the same controls, the same settings can be compared. There is a noticeable difference between them, neither one is better, just different. A good excuse to buy both :-)

A guitar track is being re-amped through both pedals. Each pedal is compared with the same guitar, the same performance and signal path. The final re-amped guitar with flanger is mixed into the track.

The pedals are going into the front of a Laney Lionheart L20H head (clean channel) and then into a 2 x 12 Celestion impulse response (G12M Greenback).

I used the bridge pickup on a USA Fender Stratocaster for all the guitar parts, except for the solo. This is is an Epiphone 50's Les Paul with the front pickup is selected and again with an MXR 'Duke of Tone' placed in front of the flangers.

The Bass is a Fender Player JazzBass.
