I found a dodgy mains lead in my parts bin, probably from China, but I can't remember the device it came with. It is supposed to have 3 cores of 0.75mm^2 (approx. AWG 18) but is clearly a fake with much thinner wires and probably aluminium instead of copper. As I have to throw it away anyway, I decided to give this thing a proper send-off, testing it to destruction.
