When we think about Soviet aerial warning aircraft, most of us immediately jump to the Mainstay. Afterall, it looks a bit like an E3 Sentry, so it must do the same job. But in fact the Mainstay was mainly intended to defend the Soviet border against SAC bombers. Soviet tactical aviation were thus without AWACS capabilities as they entered the 1980s. To fill the gap they ordered the development of the AN-71, a curious mid-sized AWACS specifically designed for 1980s Soviet tactical doctrine.
