Ted wanted to see the Harrier outside the gates at RAF WITTERING and we followed the usual polite procedure to ask permission. The guard at the gate probably had never seen a video of this kind before and we did catch a little sneaky smile off him when we finished this video.
This is the Harrier with 1 (Fighter) Squadron markings. This was the home of the Harrier (the one that takes off vertically or in abbreviations a VTOL aircraft which stands for Vertical Take Off and Landing). It was once a very busy base for the Harriers which has indeed retired now. A fleet of Harriers from RAF Wittering were deployed to the Falklands War in 1982 and their role was ground attack. This must not be confused with the Sea Harrier which is a ROYAL NAVY version of the same aircraft.
1 (Fighter) Squadron is still active today and to Ted's excitement, they have the Eurofighter Typhoon in their capable hands at RAF Lossiemouth. In this video you can see the markings of 1 squadron on the harrier which are distinctly the winged numeral "1" on the tail and also the squadron's roundal. The squadron's motto is "First in all things" ( In Omnibus Princeps) and it is the RAF's oldest unit. It is not the usual Ted video but it was nice to see the Harrier up close and personal.
