Sheffield's Old Signal Boxes - Beighton, Woodhouse Closing

Only a handful of old signal boxes remain around the Sheffield area. And soon there will be two less when Beighton and Woodhouse signal boxes are demolished.

As part of the Monday morning run, I had a trip to see them both.

Both situated on the former Great Central Main Line, they are located in the South East corner of Sheffield.

Beighton signal box has been in situ well over 100 years, but both signal boxes will soon hand their operations over to a centralised control room (York ROC?). Rather than just carrying the name of Beighton, the box still displays the Beighton Station nameplate after the station, which closed in 1954

Woodhouse Junction signal box is slightly larger and is situated where the Worksop and Chesterfield lines meet/diverge.

I'll be posting more updates via my facebook page as we see the old boxes disappear over the next few weeks. Check back for further updates.

Meanwhile, you can still take a look at Beighton Box in person, by taking Rotherham Road, just off the A57 near J31 of the M1 motorway.
Woodhouse Junction signal box is harder to see, but is located on Junction Road, just off Furnace Lane.

However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
