According to local folklore and historical beliefs, the story of Maa Kalijayi Temple is connected to a tragic incident involving a newly married woman, not Kali Maa herself.
Long ago, a newly married bride (bahu) was travelling by boat across Chilika Lake to go to her in-laws’ house (sasural). At that time, there was already a Kali Maa temple present in this area. During the journey, a powerful storm suddenly arose, and the boat capsized. Sadly, everyone on the boat lost their lives in the accident.
After this incident, local fishermen began to feel the presence of a divine spirit in the lake. They believed the soul of the bride had become a protective force, especially watching over the waters. Fishermen reported fear as well as protection, and gradually people started worshipping the spirit with deep faith.
Over time, this belief merged with the existing Kali Maa worship, and the place came to be known as Maa Kalijayi. Fishermen and devotees believe that Maa Kalijayi protects them from storms and danger, especially while travelling in Chilika Lake.
Today, Maa Kalijayi Temple is one of the most famous and sacred temples of Odisha, strongly connected with faith, folklore, and local traditions.
