DIY: How to fix thrift store tripods

Ever pick up a tripod from a thrift store that wasn't quite perfect? I'll show you how I fixed my second hand tripod, and how you may be able to fix yours.
PARTS
Metal camera quick release system http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-532...
1/4" machine screw (length will depend on tripod head)
1/4" lock washer
1/4" fender washer (diameter will depend on tripod head)
"rubber padding" - taken from flash bracket (you can also use a neoprene fender washer if the tripod head will cover it)
TOOLS USED
Flat head screwdriver
