When you work full time, winter feeding has to be simple, efficient, and reliable.
In this video, we walk through our winter hay feeding system and explain how we set it up ahead of time so we don’t have to start the tractor every day once feeding season begins.
We pre-position our round bales before winter, use a one-strand electric fence gate, and only allow cattle access to two bales at a time. As each set of bales is eaten, we open the next section and move the hay rings as needed. This saves time, reduces mud, and makes feeding possible even during extreme cold.
This system allows us to come home from work, open a gate, and be done — instead of fighting frozen equipment or muddy conditions.
We also talk about:
Why we stage hay before winter
How this reduces mud and wear on equipment
Why flexibility matters during extreme weather
How this system fits into a full-time work schedule
This is part of our Homesteading Over 40 series, where we share the systems we use to raise livestock while working full time.
If you’re trying to build a more sustainable, low-labor homestead, this system may help you do the same.
