Electricity access refers to the percentage of people in an area that have relatively simple, stable access to electricity. It can also be referred to as the electrification rate. Poor electricity access is 1 of the biggest developmental challenges facing many African countries. Millions of people live in perpetual darkness in Africa, unable to get access to electricity for essential household use.

Electricity is a major driver of development in any country, most especially in Africa. It is estimated that around 1.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to electricity in their homes, with most of these people located in Africa.

However, the number of people without access to electricity in Africa dropped from almost 860 million in 2018 to 770 million in 2019. This represents 38% of the population on the continent, indicating that Africa is improving.
