This video describes the detailed DIY installation procedure of an OEM tachometer gauge in Maruti Suzuki Alto.
A tachometer is a must have instrument especially in manually shifted cars. But originally, Alto LXi is not equipped with an rpm gauge. Only the higher variants (VX, VXI) used to get tachometer inside the meter console assembly. So this is a retrofit project for all Alto owners who crave a tachometer.
The tachometer which I have installed is originally made for Maruti Suzuki Ritz Diesel. Totally, there are 3 tachometer options as OEM Maruti Suzuki part from Astar (Petrol), Ritz (Petrol) & Ritz (Diesel). My selection criteria was mostly based upon the maximum range the meter can display. Alto's 800cc engine is rated for maximum 5500 rpm, compared to Ritz diesel tachometer's 6000 rpm maximum range. The other two tachos have maximum range of 8000rpm. Additionally, the exterior color (grey) of this tachometer suits well with Alto's interior theme and almost appears as stock.
The installation primarily requires locating the source of engine speed (rpm) signal in the car. Without disturbing the ECU, the rpm signal can be obtained from either instrument cluster (depend on wiring harness) or electronic power steering (EPS) control module (if power steering is equipped already). Remember to not take the rpm signal from ignition coil for this tachometer. It will damage the internal circuits. After locating the correct rpm signal source, the installation is fairly straight forward. Particularly, the backlight function requires a relay to provide a switched ground signal, if it needs to be operated by parking light switch. For 12v power supply, tap into to an ACC fuse (preferrably cigar lighter).
