Surface Marker Buoy's (SMB) are great tools for divers and take a bit of practice to use efficiently.
These are commonly used to help boats locate you while you are still safely below the surface, either so they won't hit you when you come up or so they can follow you and be nearby when you surface.
SMB's have lots of other uses including but not limited to: visual aids during safety stops, emergency communications, marking locations that you intend to return to or mark on the map, etc..
So here is a brief breakdown of the steps to deploying an SMB from below the surface.
