In this video, addiction counselor Rob Mo goes over all the information you need to not only understand anhedonia, but also to survive it.

Due to drugs and alcohol causing such high amounts of dopamine to be released in the brain, when the consumption stops, dopamine production also stops, putting a person into anhedonia. Once anhedonia starts taking place, a person may not feel the same pleasure they once felt in life. However, this will pass! And, there are means to help make this early phase of recovery pass by faster than average, getting someone back to a normal state of homeostasis (balanced brain chemistry). Understanding anhedonia is the first step to overcoming. Although anhedonia becomes less severe over time, it is a common predecessor of relapse. Knowing that this stage will pass is immensely valuable for getting passed it confidently and sober.
