Talk by Alberto Cobos Rábano (KU Leuven), at the Antwerp Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory Seminar on November 14, 2025.
Enumerative geometry is a classical area dealing with counts of geometric objects, such as curves inside an algebraic variety. A modern viewpoint on these problems, Gromov-Witten theory, requires technical tools, such as moduli spaces or virtual fundamental classes. Even then, GW theory does not get the right number on many situations. This talk aims to explain why these technical tools appeared in the first place and how we could use them to recover the correct curve counts from the wrong answers.
