In times of cultural upheaval, where Christians under liberal government might feel discouraged or marginalized, how should we think? How should Christians respond to elections that don’t go their way? Should we despair, disengage, or grow cynical? What should we do?
On this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell respond to the recent Canadian Election of 2025, and more broadly, to what happens when Christians find themselves living under governments and policies that stand in opposition to biblical truth. Whether you’re watching this from Canada, the U.S., or elsewhere, this episode will help you think biblically and respond wisely to political and cultural upsets. Join us as we explore how to live as faithful witnesses of Christ amid upheavals in the political arena, the church and in the ongoing cultural drift.
Many believers today are wrestling with how to live out a Christian worldview and politics in nations that are drifting further from the moral foundation of Scripture. As the Canadian government and morality shifts, and liberal ideologies take deeper root—such as the normalization of euthanasia, the loss of human dignity, and increasing hostility toward biblical values—Dr. Caldwell reminds us of a powerful truth: while governments rise and fall, the Gospel of Jesus Christ remains unshaken.
Dr. Caldwell addresses the post-election Christian perspective with clarity, reminding us that the church has always existed in hostile territory. Christians are not promised favorable cultural conditions, nor should they expect to live in a world that embraces their beliefs. Still, our calling remains constant: be the church, be salt and light, and hold fast to the truth.
The episode goes deeper into the biblical view on politics, encouraging viewers to examine what Scripture teaches about faith and government. From Romans 13 to 1 Timothy 2, we are called to pray for government leaders, even when their policies oppose our values. And yet, we are not called to blind submission. When the laws of man contradict the law of God, Christians must say with the apostles: “We must obey God rather than men.”
Dr. Caldwell says Christians should absolutely not despair, disengage, or grow cynical during these times. Rather, we should see such moments as opportunities for the Gospel to shine brightly. Even in a secular culture, even in seasons of church and cultural decline, God is not hindered. He is at work. And often, it is in times of difficulty that the church becomes most effective.
There’s also a caution here for Christians tempted to place their ultimate hope in political movements. While we might be encouraged by a resurgence of conservative values, Dr. Caldwell reminds us that the gospel vs. politics is a crucial distinction. Christianity is not conservatism. Our hope is not in the right party winning an election but in the saving work of Jesus Christ. That’s the only hope that endures.
In this Christian response to Canadian politics, we must not confuse cultural morality with Gospel transformation. The moral majority may pass away, but the church remains the pillar and support of the truth. It’s not about reclaiming culture through legislation—it’s about proclaiming Christ through the Gospel. Dr. Caldwell emphasizes that what Canada needs, what the world needs, is not a new political system but new hearts. And only God can bring that transformation.
