This exquisite Georgian bracket clock was crafted by Thyar Pitt of London, active from 1784 to 1811. Dating to around 1790, it exemplifies the high standards of late 18th-century English clockmaking and stands out for its rare and refined features.
The clock is housed in a richly patinated mahogany case with desirably small dimensions—it measures just 15 inches tall with the carrying handle lowered—a size treasured by connoisseurs. A scarce and attractive detail is the brass-bound three-pad top, each showcasing highly figured mahogany veneers—a hallmark of luxury craftsmanship. The case rests on elegantly shaped brass ogee bracket feet, while the side panels feature brass fish scale frets designed to enhance sound emission. The arched glass back door displays the intricately engraved backplate and the pendulum in motion.
The brass dial plate is adorned with enameled chapter and strike/silent plates, inscribed with the maker's name, Thyar Pitt. Elegant rococo spandrels frame the enameled sections, and open arrow hands, beautifully filed in steel, indicate the time.
Inside, the clock boasts an exceptional eight-day fusee movement, precisely engineered and finished to the highest standards. A pull cord repeat mechanism audibly announces the most recently struck hour—a feature that provides both convenience and social prestige. It also has a strike /silent feature, allowing one to shut off the strike. The backplate is deeply engraved with floral arabesques and foliate scrollwork, affirming the artistry behind its mechanics.
This clock is a rare find. It combines refined proportions, exceptional craftsmanship, and the increasingly scarce three-pad top design—an exemplary piece for collectors of fine Georgian horology.
