This song has been on my wishlist for a long time. I really love the changes in the keys. The song starts in G and it goes to Em after 8 bars. The solo of the electric guitar is in D and the last saxsolo (outro) is in G. Everytime I hear the last saxsolo I get goosebumps.
And it’s such a lovely basspart! It’s got lovely 16th notes licks (as in bar 23, 39 and 48); beautifully staccato (short) notes as in bar 45 and nicely played licks as in bar 96 ,97 where the staccato notes really make the difference.
And I also like the details in rootnotes. The first chords of the Verse are Cmaj7 Bm and Em. The first chords of the Chorus are Cmaj7 Bm/D and Em. So the chords are the same, but the rootnote in the Bm chord (D in the Chorus) makes the difference. You can see that I respond on that difference by playing the E in the Verse on the D-string (second position), while I play the E in the Chorus on the A-string (seventh position). That’s because in the Chorus you first get the D note and therefore I think it’s more natural to play the E on the A-string also.
And I also like that George Ford plays (in most of the times) a low E note (open E-string) after he plays the E note on octave higher on the first beat of the Em bar. And George Ford has found ways to vary in Em chord. He varies a lot by sometimes playing eight notes; quarter notes; sixteenth notes and also by varying the passing notes.
It’s a very musical basspart and I hope you enjoy it!

I play this song on a Fender Jazz Bass with roundwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a preamp.
Don’t forget to tune your bass just a bit higher (A4 = 444 Hz).
Bass: George Ford
