Welcome to Dakar, the dynamic capital of Senegal - a must-visit gem in West Africa where history, culture, and modern life all converge. In this full travel guide to the capital, I'll help you discover why Dakar is the must-visit hidden gem of West Africa that simply cannot be missed. From its bustling streets to its coastal views, I was very impressed with the variety of amazing attractions that this West African capital has to offer. Hands down, this is as cosmopolitan and developed as it gets in this part of Africa, and you're sure to have an amazing time in this safe and welcoming city! Solo travel is surprisingly easy here, even if you are a novice traveller.
I begin my exploration of Dakar with a tour around the heart of its downtown Plateau district, home to most of the city's highrise buildings, the lovely Independence Square, the Presidential Palace, the city's main French colonial Cathedral, the impressive 19th century City Hall and Train Station, and the colourful and vibrant Kermel Market. This is definitely a city you'll need to spend several days in to see everything, so plan accordingly!
After touring the Plateau district, I make my way 15 kilometers north to the upscale Ngor District, home to most embassies and some of the best beaches in the area. Here, I visited some of the city's best tourist attractions and top sights, including the Westernmost Point of Africa, soaked in the beautiful Atlantic oceanside views with a cold Senegalese beer, checked out the historic 19th century Mamelles Lighthouse, and climbed the steep staircase to check out the towering African Renaissance Monument.
To wrap up my time in Dakar, I take the ferry to nearby Goree Island, once home to the largest slave trade market in Africa, to learn about the sobering and somber history of slavery, tour the slave dungeons, and walk to the infamous "Door of No Return" to see where African slaves were loaded onto ships to head to the Americas. Definitely a historic spot that is not to be missed on your visit to Dakar.
Dakar is simply an amazing city, and I hope this video helps you get a sense of what to expect on your visit as I highlight some of the best ways to spend your time in Senegal's surprising capital city.
