The Pentagon is mobilizing an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles on President Donald Trump’s order, it said late Monday, escalating the ongoing feud with California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Earlier, the agency announced it had sent 700 Marines to backstop the National Guard, whose deployment Trump ordered this past weekend to quell clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement after a series of immigration raids in the city. Monday night’s announcement pushes the number of military personnel mobilized for duty in Los Angeles to approximately 4,800. Newsom blamed Trump for the chaos and said California will send more than 800 additional law enforcement officers to the city “to pick up the pieces.”

President Donald Trump said Sunday he was not prepared at this time to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to respond to protests in the Los Angeles area as he deployed 2,000 National Guard members to the region, a move the state’s governor condemned as “purposefully inflammatory.”
Asked whether he was prepared to invoke the law, which grants presidents authority to deploy US military domestically, Trump told reporters in New Jersey it “depends whether or not there is an insurrection.”
