Is Keeping a Beard Sunnah or Wajib for Muslim Men? [Part 1/5]

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
Have you ever wondered whether keeping a beard is just a Sunnah - a practice of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) or Wajib - an obligation for Muslim men?
You might have heard people say, "Growing a beard is just a Sunnah and shaving it is only slightly disliked," or that it’s a minor issue that doesn’t matter in today’s world. Some might even argue that to fit in with modern society, it’s better to shave.
But let’s pause for a moment. What does the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and our respected scholars say about this?
Today, I want to dive deeper into this topic and explore why many Muslims consider sparing the beard obligatory.
As this topic involves many references, we will have to break them down into a few episodes to fully cover this topic.
Dear brothers and sisters, as we approach the blessed month of Rabi’ Al-Awwal, a time when we commemorate the birth of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we are reminded of his profound journey—one that began as an orphan and blossomed into the greatest mercy to mankind. He (ﷺ), our greatest role model, brought with him the Message of Truth, the Message of Allah, His Oneness. This message led many towards the path of enlightenment, helping them distinguish between right and wrong. What greater way to honour his legacy than by extending our hands to those in need, especially the most vulnerable—our orphans.
This is our moment to reflect, to act, and to embody the compassion and generosity that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us. I urge each of you to open your hearts and give generously. Your support is not just a donation; it’s a lifeline, a source of hope, and a powerful act of worship.

May Allah, Most Glorified and Sublimed be He, accept our efforts, multiply our rewards, and ease the pain of every orphaned child, especially those enduring unimaginable hardship in Gaza. May He bless us with the strength to continue this noble work, following the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), not just in this sacred month, but every single day of our lives. May His mercy, guidance, and light always be with us.
Ameen ya Rabbul Alameen.
