Discover the world’s quietest room at Microsoft’s campus, where sound levels drop to -20.35 decibels, creating an eerie, surreal experience that few can endure.
Imagine a room so quiet that you can hear your own heartbeat and the sound of your blood flowing. Microsoft’s anechoic chamber, located at its Redmond campus, holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s quietest room, with a sound level of -20.35 decibels.
This room is designed to absorb 99.99% of sound and is used to test audio equipment and voice recognition software. However, stepping inside isn’t for everyone—most people can’t endure it for more than 45 minutes to an hour. The silence is so profound that it can cause disorientation, a loss of balance, and even hallucinations.
Built with six layers of concrete and steel, the chamber is completely isolated from outside noise. Inside, wedge-shaped fiberglass panels line the walls to eliminate echoes. Engineers use this eerie space to perfect technologies like Microsoft Surface devices and Xbox consoles.
