Background to Story: The Berlin Wall is now 20 years old. The East Germans began the
physical isolation of West Berlin on 13th August 1961, partly with the intention of
preventing a flood of their citizens leaving for the West. This report looks briefly
at the wall's history and at conditions in the divided city today.
