The business world is full of start-ups, scale-ups, unicorns, growth projections, outsourcing and maximizing profit. Yet, some people push back against this trend: the makers, the artisans and the craftspeople. These people are all about small-batch, handcrafted products made with time-honoured tools and techniques. They love the craft, the artistry and getting their hands dirty. Handmade is a docuseries that explores the lives of Canadians dedicated to heritage techniques and small batch production. We will examine some of the crazy things they make, how they make them, but we will also take a glimpse into their lives. Some live paycheque to paycheque with their livelihood rising and falling on what is trendy or fashionable. When they hit hard times, we will learn how they get through and whether they can survive while living a life that goes against the grain. www.abelsonqueen.com
A barbershop is more than a place to get your hair cut: that’s what Mitch Bright believes. As a pioneer in bringing back the barbershop, Mitch had to travel to Europe to learn traditional techniques in barbering and hot towel shaves — services that seemed to be lost to the past. It hasn’t always been easy but Mitch is leading the new renaissance in Kitchener that isn’t just about cuts— he believes in self-care, taking your time with the customer and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.
