Bandarawela railway station was built in 1894 during the British colonial period in Sri Lanka. The first train arriving at the station on 19 th June1893. The station was part of the broader development of the Main Line railway, which was constructed to facilitate the transport of tea and other goods from the central highlands to the port city of Colombo. The railway line significantly contributed to the economic development of the region and remains an important part of Sri Lanka's transportation infrastructure.. The station has a G2 locomotive on permanent display at the station. The diesel shunter locomotive was built by the North British Locomotive Company and operated between 1951 and 1986 at Maligawatta and Thali Mannar. It was moved to Bandarawela on 16 August 2011 and put on display...
