루앙프라방에 있는 독특한 불교 문화유적을 보기 위해, 선착장으로 향했다. 메콩강과 남우강이 합류하는 지점에 거대한 절벽동굴이 있다는데 바로 이곳에 불교 문화유적지인, 빠우 동굴이 있다. 빠우 동굴에 가려면 메콩강 선착장에서 배를 타야한다. 뱃사공들은 하루에도 수십 번씩 강을 오가며, 현지인은 물론 관광객들을 동굴에 데려다준다. “이곳에서 얼마나 사셨어요?” “반 끗 마을에서 60년 정도 살았어요.” “하루에 몇 번 왕복하시나요?” “하루에 3~4번 왕복해요.” 라오스인들의 중요한 교통수단인 배를 타고 그들의 성지로 향했다. 라오스는 국민 대부분이 불교 신자라 해도 과언이 아니다. 라오스인들의 신앙심을 느낄 수 있는 불교 성지. 빠우 동굴은 남녀노소 할 것 없이 현지 주민들도 많이 찾는 곳이다. 이곳은 윗 동굴과 아랫 동굴이 있는데, 윗 동굴의 불상을 보려면 손전등을 가지고 가야 한다. 빠우 동굴 안에는 수천 개의 작은 불상들이 모셔져 있다. “빠우라는 것은 한국어로 입. 동굴이라는 말이 이곳 말로 타미고요. 그래서 탐 빠우라고 불리는 곳입니다. 이곳에는 전설이 하나가 있는데요. 아무도 모르게 불상을 동굴에 가져다 놓으면 소원이 이뤄진다고 합니다. 지금 신도들이 가져다 놓은 불상이 몇 개인지 정확히 알 수 없습니다.” 중국과 태국, 베트남 등 주변 국가의 침략을 받아온 라오스. 그래서 이 지역의 사람들은 외지인들이 약탈해갈 수 없는 곳에 불상을 가져다놓고 소원을 빌었다고 한다. “친구들과 함께 여기 온 것은 저에게 굉장히 중요합니다. 여기는 생각을 더 높은 차원으로 이끌고, 창의적인 영감을 주는 곳이에요. 당신도 느낄 수 있을 겁니다.” 몸과 마음이 고달프면 라오스를 가라는 말이 있다. 크고 작은 불상들이 모여 있는 이곳에선 누구든 부처의 가르침 속에, 마음의 평화를 얻을 수 있기 때문이 아닐까. “저에게는 평화로운 장소입니다. 많은 불상들이 사람들에게 친근함을 느끼게 해주고 모든 사람을 이해 할 수 있도록 좋은 영향을 주는 것 같습니다.” 라오스인들의 삶은 불교의 윤회 사상을 바탕에 두고 있다. 그래서 남을 공경하면 나도 공경 받고, 이승에서 복을 쌓아야만 다음 세상에서도 좋은 곳에 태어난다고 믿는다. 이런 불교의 가르침을 떠올리며, 나도 소원을 빌어본다. 평화롭게 흐르는 잔잔한 강물처럼 이곳을 찾는 모든 이들도 마음의 평안을 얻길 바라본다.
