The Saltfleet Tank (Comet)

Hi all

So first i just want to say this walk was not at all dangerous and we walked the perimeter up to the old abandoned Tank. The only time you should not walk over the flats in when the red flag is up and thats just for low flying jets in the winter months that now use a totally different area as this area was abandoned in the 1970s due to its proximity of a natural gas terminal. it was where 20mm cannons trails were tested.

This actaul area was sold to the nature reserve. so please enjoy!

The warning is about digging but even then it says its at your own risk. not that I would even go out and attempt that.

Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve (NNR) is on the Lincolnshire coast, the site comprising eight km of coastal dunes and foreshore. The site is located on the coastal dunes to the east of the A1031, between Saltfleet and Mablethorpe, and close to Saltfleetby Saint Clement and Theddlethorpe Saint Helen. There are seven car parks offering access to the reserve.
The dunes began forming in the 13th century, and the same processes of wind and tidal action continue dune formation on the site today. The dunes support a variety of flowers and grasses while saltmarsh and freshwater marsh areas are home to a wide variety of insects, amphibians, birds and mammals. Its constantly changing habitats, shaped by the wind and sea, are home to a wealth of plants, birds and insects.
Although this wild area is the result of natural processes, it has been influenced over time by man. The site was purchased by the Air Ministry for use as a bombing range in the 1930s, and the beach was littered with old vehicles which were used as targets. During the Second World War tank traps and pillboxes were built, and the dunes were mined to defend against invasion. In 1969, part of the site was handed over to the Nature Conservancy and declared a National Nature Reserve (NNR). The bombing range eventually moved further north to Donna Nook in 1973.
