Edward Burne-Jones ( Birmingham, 28.8. 1833 – London, 17.6.1898)
“The legend of St. George and the Dragon”, the first of Burne-Jones’ series, is a groups pf seven paintings that tell the Story of St. George and the Dragon.
The series was commisioned by Myles Birket Foster, one of England’s most successful book illustrator and watercolorist, to decorate the dinning room of his house, “The Hill”, in Surrey.
"Burne Jones completed the first three panels and these were installed at The Hill by the end of 1865, but in August 1866 Burne Jones was still making preliminary tree studies, some of the paintings beeing finally completed by assistant Fairfax Murray.
Between 1895 and 1897 the paintings went into the market again, being largely repainted by Burne-Jones.
The catalogue published by McLean Gallery in 1985 incorporated some quotes from William Morris’ “The Earthly Paradise” accompanying every painting.
"So as it drew to ending of the day,
unto the city did they take their way
So through the streets they went and quickly spread
News that the terror of the land was dead.
And folk thronged round to see the twain go by
Or went before with flower and minstrelsy,
Rejoicing for the slaying of their shame."
