Chapter 11, "College Accounting" by Haddock: One of the important aspects of payroll management is the calculation of the tax obligations and reporting requirements for employers. Employers must handle withholdings for social security, Medicare, and income taxes, as well as the employer match. In addition, the employer or payroll accountant is responsible for quarterly payroll-related tax returns, payroll tax deposits, and year-end tax forms.
In this video, we’ll learn about Form 941 – Employer’s quarterly federal tax return, the frequency with which employers must deposit the employee’s withholdings for social security, Medicare, and income taxes and the employer match. In addition, we’ll talk about the year-end Form W-2 and Form W-3. Both your homework and the unit exam will include exercises and questions related to this topic.
Ask yourself:
Do you understand the significance of Form 941 and its role in reporting payroll taxes to the IRS on a quarterly basis?
Do you understand the frequency with which employers must deposit employee withholdings for social security, Medicare, and income taxes?
