Restauration Teal 43
TEAL 43-- One of a Kind
After a, in Dutch terms, short restoration period of over five years, yet again the highest goal achieved and herewith my story of a challenging restoration which is successfully brought to an end.
Budget? Practice exercise.
The Teal 43 is now 99.9% restored to showroom state, optimally capable,
MOT-approved and the fine tuning performed with great precision,
but still some problems with the two carburettors Stromberg.
Many thanks to my English car friend, restorer (not pursang) , keen alu-body maker Mike Hall,
keen mainstay Siem Kaandorp, handson Robert Schipper,
sprayer Karel van de Oudenaren, upholsterer Rob Kool,
engine- and gearbox overhaul by Motorenrevisie Meijerink and the numerous parts suppliers.
At each end (result) there is a start.
Trafford Engineering Automotive Ltd, brief and to the point,, TEAL,was a classiccarsfactory and the name associated with a special kind of goose, the teal duck.
The Tealfactory produced a total of 160 Teal Variants between 1981 and 2000,
inspired by Bugatti.
A self-designed chassis with GRP-body with front / rear axles, engine and gearbox
of choice, from a Morris Marina of Jaguar.
All this designed by Ian Foster (RIP) and Bob Jones (later owner of the Teal Factory),
handmade assembled to boat tails or four-seater in Type 35,43,44 or 59.
The history of my Teal goes back to 1984 when Bob Jones started building his own Teal.
He designed, built his own Bugatti 35 boattail ,blue spraid Teal 35, with liscenseplate NNF43P and held it for a long time, for what later turned out to be my Teal.
The second owner Dave Brunt crashed with Bob Jones's Teal 35 boat tail and
sold the wrecked GRP-bodied Teal to the alu-bodymaker Mike Hall .
He started in 1992 with the restoration and transformation to model 43, inspired by the Bugatti 43, with special attention to the "dickey seat" backside instead of regular boat tail.
As with so many projects, the Teal 43 disappeared over the years bluntly and unfinished in a barn in Evesham England.
During the earlier restoration of my Teal 35 boattail ,from october 2009 til octber 2010,
I noticed this dusty unfinished project in Mike Hall 's barn and I set my heart on this aluminum bodied classic Teal in progress.
You can not bother me, but in my mind I saw a beautiful and rare open two-seater called Teal 43 and dreamed about it.
After serious negotiations with the owner/bodymaker, I became the 4th owner of this barnfind, one of a kind, correctly registered Teal 43, but still unfinished.
Serious negotiations because Mike Hall meant the project in fact as a wedding gift for his daughter.
At the end we agreed on the price, conditions and finishing level of quality ( MOT etc ).
For a second opinion my fellowmate Siem did a comprehensive inspection.
Part of the deal was that the cosmetic remodelling ( spraying and upholstery, cabriohood etc),
would be done in Holland lateron .
Restoration started in november 2010 in Evesham.
In april 2012, I transported the MOT-ed Teal 43 to the Netherlands.
Starting preparation for spraying , upholstery, soft top and more of those things, we found out that a further technical restoration to a higher standard was absolutely necessary .
In the end , we write October 2015, cosmeticaly at the highest level, but technically not. .
In short time, refilling gasoline, starting, running, moving to the MOT must be the the final step.
It was a desillusion. The engine did not run at all.
You already understand my Christmas- and New Year wishes, driving with the Teal 43 in April next, ends up in smoke.
Extensive research on the straight six, gearbox, propshaft, spiral springs and brakingsystem, gave me a mental and financial chock. Complete revision of the mentioned components was necessary. Thus decided.
I then leaned on my own perseverance and my buddies Siem and Robert. August 2016, the enginetuner Hurrycane did a huge job. The MOT, with some minor adjustments, went through well.
The Maiden Trip gave a more than satisfiyng feeling and the Teal 43 ran like a toy for a senior classiccar lover.
Seeing a great classiccar ,running well and smooth , and a smiley-mouthed amature restorer,
I finally endured good memories of a...
