The Wheatley Tunnel, a 745-meter (819-yard) long railway tunnel, was a key part of the Halifax High Level Railway, connecting the higher and lower parts of Halifax. Built in 1876 and completed ahead of the adjacent viaduct, it initially carried goods traffic before passenger services began in 1890. The tunnel was a major engineering feature, along with the viaduct, of the 3-mile branch line. Passenger services ended in 1917, but freight trains continued to use the tunnel until 1960
The tunnel's interior is lined with brick, and there are refuges inserted in the walls, some of which have been filled with breeze blocks. A ventilation shaft, emerging as a square brick tower, is located around 520 yards from the west end. The portal is a substantial stone structure with buttresses and a headwall topped with masonry copings
The tunnel and its adjacent viaduct are now part of the Historical Railways Estate. The viaduct has undergone recent restoration work to ensure its preservation for future generations
