I never thought I'd die three hundred feet in the air.
The ladder rungs are cold under my hands even through the gloves. Each step up makes my thighs burn, makes my breath come harder in the thin November wind. Below me, the access hatch to the nacelle—that's what the manual called it, the nacelle, like some kind of spacecraft component—sits open, a dark square against the white fiberglass housing. Above me, another sixty rungs to the roof where I've built what might laughably be called a shelter. A tarp. Some two-by-fours I hauled up here over three days. A sleeping bag that cost me two hundred dollars back when money meant something.
