Glass Onion was recorded between the 11th September and the 10th October 1968. Written during the groups trip to India, John's first recording of the song was made at George Harrisons Kinfauns Bungalow in May 1968, which can be heard on Anthology 3 as part of the Esher Demos.
Entering the studio at Trident, in order to make use of their 8-track tape machines, on the 11th September 1968 to record the basic rhythm track, the line up consisted of John on Acoustic Guitar (Most likely the J-160e), Paul on his Rickenbacker 4001v63, George on (Most likely) his 1961 Sonic Blue Fender Stratocaster, painted in the "Rocky" paint scheme, and Ringo on his Ludwig Black Tortoise Shell Drumkit. The band recorded 34 Takes of the song during this session, and selected Take 33 as the master.
The following day on the 12th September Vocals were added, recorded by Lennon, and additional Tambourine by Ringo.
On the 13th September, additional Piano, Drumkit and Recorded was added to the track. Later on the 20th September, sound effects by Lennon were recorded, but following deliberation, these effects were removed.
In orded to fill the gap made by the missing sound effects, George Martin gathered a String Octet (Of four Violins, two Violas, and two Celli), and this was recorded and added to the master on the 10th October 1968.
In my recording of the song, for John's Acoustic Guitar, I'm using my 2015 Epiphone EJ-160e, recorded with my Rode NT1-A Condenser Microphone, placed right of the guitar, perpendicular to the body and slightly angled to the soundhole.
For George's Electric Guitar, I'm using my 2021 Squier 50's Vibe Stratocaster, painted by myself in the Rocky paint scheme, plugged into my Vox AC30VR, with the distortion being achieved through the Amps built in Overdrive Setting, with minimal gain, high volume, no bass, slight middle and full treble. The tone cut was fully engaged on the Amplifier also. The microphone I used to record this guitar was my Shure SM57, placed around 15-20cm from the speaker cone.
I hope this has been an informative read and watch, and if you enjoyed, I would appreciate it if you would consider liking my video, subscribing to my channel, and turning on the post notifications, so you're notified of new content I upload (More on the way of course! Hint.... BBC!...)
