Kissing a White Skunk!

Normally you shouldn't kiss a skunk, but sometimes you can't help yourself!

Jolene is white, but she's technically a rare lavender-colored skunk with a gentle temperament and an irresistible face. The lavender comes from the color of her nose and her toe beans.

But no matter how charming she is, skunks should never be kept as pets. In this episode, I visit Westminster Farm to meet Jolene and explain exactly why.

Skunks are deeply misunderstood creatures. Most people only know them as the animal that might spray you—and yes, skunks can do that, but they really don’t want to. Their spray is a last resort defense, not something they use casually. In fact, they’ll give plenty of warning first: stomping their feet, hissing, and raising their tails before they ever let loose.

Here are a few things you should know:

• A “lavender skunk” isn’t albino. Jolene still has pigment in her eyes, which are not the signature pink of an albino animal.

• Skunks are nocturnal and extremely sensitive to light. Keeping one as a pet would mean flipping its natural rhythm.

• Even with their scent glands removed (which some people do), skunks still have a strong musky odor. You’re not removing the smell—just the spray.

• Skunks are wild animals. They dig, chew, and are not domesticated like cats or dogs. That adorable face hides a set of claws made for tearing into soil and, unfortunately, furniture.

• But they are beneficial. In the wild, skunks are natural pest control, eating insects, rodents, and even venomous snakes.
