Achara and Kristen watch the exciting and life-affirming Ridley Scott film, The Martian, for the very first time! In The Martian, we follow a stranded astronaut fighting for survival on Mars while NASA and his crew race against time to bring him home.

The Martian was directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Blade Runner, Alien). The main cast includes Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, The Bourne Identity, Interstellar) as Mark Watney, a botanist and astronaut left stranded on Mars who must use his ingenuity to survive. Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar, Molly’s Game) plays Commander Melissa Lewis, the leader of the Ares III mission who struggles with the guilt of leaving Watney behind. Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, Dumb and Dumber, Steve Jobs) portrays Teddy Sanders, the head of NASA, tasked with overseeing the rescue operation. Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Doctor Strange, Serenity) stars as Vincent Kapoor, NASA’s Mars mission director working to bring Watney home. Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Wonder Woman 1984, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) plays Annie Montrose, NASA’s media relations director balancing public perception and crisis management. Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Game of Thrones, GoldenEye) appears as Mitch Henderson, a flight director advocating for Watney’s rescue. Michael Peña (Ant-Man, End of Watch, American Hustle) plays Rick Martinez, the pilot of the Hermes spacecraft and one of Watney’s crewmates. Kate Mara (House of Cards, Fantastic Four, Chappaquiddick) portrays Beth Johanssen, the mission’s systems specialist, while Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I, Tonya, Pam & Tommy) plays Dr. Chris Beck, the crew’s medical officer. Donald Glover (Atlanta, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Community) has a memorable role as Rich Purnell, a brilliant yet eccentric astrodynamicist who devises a daring rescue plan. The film masterfully blends science, humor, and human resilience, delivering an inspiring and thrilling survival story.
