Lo stile Liberty, nasce in Francia e si diffonde in tutta Europa a cavallo tra l’800 e il 900. A Milano, che in quegli anni era il maggiore polo industriale d’Italia, lo stile Liberty con la sua eleganza decorativa piace molto alla nuova borghesia fatta di imprenditori, ricchi industriali e commercianti. Questi adottarono lo stile Liberty per rimarcare la propria importanza e distacco dall’antica nobiltà, le cui ville erano in stile neoclassico. Così Milano dai primi anni del 1900 inizia ad accogliere il Liberty nei suoi palazzi d’edilizia pubblica e privata e nelle sue architetture: Porta Venezia è la Milano Liberty per eccellenza.
