the quiet flick & shuffle of cards, as a lively game of whist demonstrates that play is not just the domain of children and instead befits all who choose to partake in it, whatever the form
the sprightly bustle of hostess with company, she in whom the season's virtue of generosity finds glad expression in the offering, and offering again, of refreshments always in miraculous abundance; she glides among guests as if tripping and whirling to the music of clinking punch-glasses, and clattering teaware, and cake-slicing, and candy-bowl filling
