Among Poulenc’s many compositional gifts was his remarkable ability to end a piece. While endings typically serve to resolve musical conflicts, for Poulenc, they were often more emotionally and sonoristically complex. Rather than simply wrapping things up, some of his endings cast doubt on everything that came before, while others seem to open up entirely new musical landscapes, just as those final notes fade away. Join composer Frederick Viner as he investigates two of Poulenc’s most extraordinary endings.
