I have been a lover of ambient and ambient-adjacent music for a long time. Probably around two decades! But, I never felt really capable of creating any of my own. Admittedly probably false and based on nothing, but brains are fun aren't they. One morning a while ago I woke up and spontaneously decided to just give it a try and see what happens. I gave myself a prompt: Create a simple, looping synth melody in a major key, changing the parameters and filters on my synth until I got bored. Well, that turned out to be a surprisingly long time. I was definitely not aware that six whole minutes had passed by; I absolutely lost track of time. With that realisation, combined with the happy coincidence that the melody I'd come up with was in 7/4 time, the piece named itself. I then pondered the other contexts to which the phrase "losing track of time" could apply, such as in the musical sense of zoning out of where beat one lands, or maybe how your mind wanders when you're out on a care-free hike with nothing important in the diary for the day. I imagined portraying that sort of feeling on my fretless, so I improvised playing loosely and not particularly in-time until I found some melodies that sounded daydream-like. Although I put my heart and soul into the other music I make, it can feel somewhat mechanical due to the nature of its style, whereas this felt more like expressionist painting. I enjoyed making it so much that I frankly felt silly for not giving it a go sooner. I knew pretty quickly that I was going to make more ambient music, and I dove in head first.
