Broken Implant Screw Removal Kit - Salvin Dental

Alex Rugh, CDT explains how to use the Salvin screw removal kit to retrieve a broken screw from a dental implant.

The screw removal Kits from Salvin Dental have tools that help you remove broken screws from a variety of common implant systems.

There are actually two different kits available from Salvin. The original kit is called the Implant Rescue Kit and it can be used to remove broken screws and also failed implants. It works for Nobel, 3i, BioHorizons, ZimVie and several other implants systems. The second kit is called the Narrow Implant Broken Screw Kit and it works for the several 3.0 platform implants as well as for the Straumann NC and RC bone level implants.

Each kit comes with a set of centering guides that are each designed to fit perfectly to a specific implant system and size. The guides protect the internal walls of the implant from damage during the removal process. Most of the centering guides can be used for multiple implants so Salvin provides a compatibility chart so that you can determine the correct guide for the screw you're removing.

When you've chosen the correct centering guide, you'll attach it to the guide handle and use that to connect the guide to the interface of the implant and hold it in place.

With the centering guide in position you will use one of the included screw drills to prepare a dimple in the top of the broken screw. Connect the drill to your handpiece and set your handpiece to reverse mode with a speed of 1000 rpm. Place the drill through the drill guide and drill 1 to 2 mm in to the screw using irrigation and periodic air-blasts. When complete, you can remove the drill guide from the implant and use suction to remove any metal shavings.

With the dimple created, you can now use the tap drill to remove the screw. This is done by placing the tap drill in to the dimple that was created and rotating it counterclockwise while applying light pressure. This can either be done manually with the included hand adapter or with a handpiece set to reverse mode around 50 RPM.
