------------------
Newton Abbot is a town located in the South of Devon, 26 miles north-east of Plymouth and 13 miles south of Exeter. It can be found just off the A380, the main road to Paignton and Torquay from the M5/A38 Devon Expressway. It is situated beside the River Teign, which separates Newton Abbot from neighbouring Kingsteignton.
Newton Abbot is a market town, and there have been markets here for over 750 years. Despite having its routes in the Medieval period, in both markets and the wool trade, the town grew rapidly during the 19th century. Today, it is the 7th most populated town in Devon.
The town was originally connected to Torre Abbey at the neighbouring town of Torquay, and because of this, it was named 'New Town of the Abbots'. By the start of the 14th century, this name had been shortened to 'Newton Abbot' with 'Newton' being a shortened form of 'New Town' and 'Abbot' being a shortened form of 'Abbots'. The 'of the' was, of course, removed.
