This talk examines recent efforts in Alberta, Canada, to reconfigure bitumen for non-combustion uses in response to growing environmental, political, and market pressures on its continued extraction, transportation, and use as a fossil fuel. These include initiatives to develop non-combustion uses for bitumen, as well as related efforts to devise formats for storing and transporting bitumen in solid phase. I consider whether recent conversations concerning the "real subsumption of nature" and the onset of "green capitalism" shed light on the continuity of fossil capital after fossil fuels, and, reciprocally, what thinking with the material rehabilitation of bitumen might contribute to these conversations, and to understanding the emerging politics of energy transition.
