This game was pretty ambitious for a Gameboy Color game, but Konami managed to pull it off for the most part. However, don't expect the boss fights to be near as epic as the ones from the Playstation game with the same name. The style is there, with the characters having their own themes, even paranormal like Marionette Owl, but fighting them can be awful. They're either too easy or way too hard. I still can't get over how much of a nightmare the final Metal Gear fight is. Then, the "final" final fight is an absolute joke! Still worth it for Metal Gear superfans like me though...
0:00 Slasher Hawk
2:57 Marionette Owl
5:34 Pyro Bison
8:21 Helicopter
10:49 Viper
16:03 Metal Gear
24:37 Viper Final
It was crazy seeing Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil crammed into a handheld. Each game definitely has its' problems, but are worth playing for fans of the series. This game is like some weird "What If" game that was scrapped before the masterpiece that is the original came out. But this is two years later, which makes it kind of odd. It's non-canon, with Mei Ling being introduced to Snake for the first time, and there's no mention of nanomachines at all. Crazy, I know. There's a female soldier you work with named Chris and you have to save the lead designer of Metal Gear who is a young kid named Jimmy. Now that I think of it, this really is like a super poverty version of the PS1 classic. Here, the levels are way too confusing and the fight against the Metal Gear is cruel and punishing. Like RE Gaiden, only play if you are a fan of the series...
Metal Gear Solid for the Game Boy Color, also known as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel in Japan, is a unique entry in the legendary stealth-action series. Released in 2000, the game reimagines the tactical espionage action of the PlayStation classic in a top-down 2D style that pays homage to the original MSX games. Players once again step into the role of Solid Snake, who is sent on a mission to infiltrate a terrorist-controlled fortress and stop a new version of the deadly Metal Gear weapon.
The game features a mix of sneaking, puzzle-solving, and combat, with Snake relying on stealth tactics, gadgets, and careful planning to avoid detection. It includes a detailed storyline with cutscenes and radio conversations that carry the same cinematic flair the series is known for. Alongside the main campaign, the game offers VR training missions and a time attack mode to expand replay value.
Despite its handheld limitations, the Game Boy Color version of Metal Gear Solid delivers an impressive amount of depth, atmosphere, and challenge, making it one of the most acclaimed titles on the system and a must-play for fans of tactical stealth games.
