In this song, the poet Dev Dungarpuri invites us to engage in a wondrous kind of farming - in which the plough is fragrant like sandalwood, the seeds planted are jewels, the harvest is of pearls, and their market bustles in our body-selves. 'Jewel' is often an image for 'breath'. In the field of our attention, do we take time to plant and nurture this seed?

We are indebted to the 'Aaraadhi’ bhajan mandali of Bhujodi village in Kutch, from whom we first heard this mesmerising song. Sung here by Vipul Rikhi, the song is shot spontaneously and exquisitely in an impromptu moment by photographer and designer Smriti Chanchani, one of the primary members of the Kabir Project team since 2005.

Writer and singer Vipul Rikhi is one of the core members of the Kabir Project team and a co-creator of Ajab Shahar, a forthcoming digital archive celebrating Bhakti, Sufi and Baul poetry. In the course of these inner and outer journeys, he has developed a deep love for singing mystic poetry in the folk idiom. He has two books forthcoming as part of his work with Kabir Project. He also writes poetry and fiction, and has published a novel and collections of poetry and short stories. He was a fellow for literature at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany in 2010-11.
