Erumely Pettathullal also known as Petta Kettu is a ritual dance performed with percussion accompaniment as part of the Sabarimala pilgrimage in the Mandalam - Makaravilakku period (November, December and January). This ritual is performed in the town of Erumely in Kottayam district, Kerala, India, on the 27th of the Malayalam month Dhanu.
Pettathullal depicts the joyfulness of people over the slaying of Mahishi by Lord Ayyappa. Two groups actively participate in the thullal, one from Ambalappuzha and other from Aalangadu. The Ambalappuzha group starts their journey to Erumely on the 22nd of Dhanu and a couple of days before the thullal. They visit the Manimala Bhagavathy temple on 25th Dhanu and perform an Aazhi pooja. Before the Ambalappuzha thullal, a Krishna parunth (sacred eagle) flies around in the sky. It is believed that lord Vishnu himself arrives from Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna temple on his mount Garuda to witness the thullal.
Pettathullal is a symbolic representation of a community against the uprisings of Adharma or injustice. By slaying the demoness Mahishi, Ayyappa empowered the people by saying that "Unity is the key to social transformation".
The first devotees to visit Sabarimala (these are known as Kanniswamys) perform the Pettathullal. Pettathullal is a ritual in which the face is painted and danced with wooden weapons. This prayer means abandoning one's ego and surrendering oneself to Lord Ayyappa. People perform Pettathullal around the Ayyappa Temple and the Vavar Mosque. Then they go to the river and bath.
After bathing, the devotees visit the temple again and seek permission from Ayyappan to climb Sabarimala. The devotees then go to the Sannidhanam as per the instructions of their Guru.
This is a ritualistic dance performance by the Sabarimala Ayyappans, who start from the Kochambalam Ayyappa Temple in Erumeli Peta, enter the Vavarpalli mosque, pray around and proceed to the Valiyambalam Sastha Temple, half a kilometre south, with a percussion accompaniment.
In the past, it was customary to celebrate "a group of mortals in Dharani went to Erumeli in droves to knock down Mayyan".
The first ritual is the "atonement" in which a coin along with vettila and pakku is placed on the ‘irumudikettu’ of the holy sinner, asking for forgiveness for mistakes made knowingly or unknowingly during the fasting period.
Next is giving Dakshina to the Periyaswamy. Then vegetables and tubers are wrapped in a blanket tied in a stick about eight feet length. Two virgin Ayyappans (first climbers) carry the ends of the pole on their shoulders. The number of such pairs will increase according to the number of virgins. The rest had ‘sharakkol’ and green sticks in their hands. He spreads saffron and bhasmam all over him.
Pettahullal starts from the front of the Kochambalam in Pettah. First, rolls coconut on the steps. After that enters the Kochambalam and perform darshan. From there it moves towards the opposite Vavarpalli accompanied by percussions and holy chanting by the Ayyappans - "Ayyappa Thinthakathom, Swami Thinthakathom".
The Ayyappans visit Vavaruswamy and then the Valiyambalam. Here the green stalks are placed on top of the temple. After visiting the temple they takes rests.
The next day The old-fashioned way was to eat, 'Brahmin Dakshina' and 'Sadya', to greet the Gurus, to climb the Neelimala, to dwell in the Sabari Peedam, to turn around the Saramkuthi and to see Hariharasutan, stepping on the true golden eighteenth step. With the advent of the Chalakayam route, the number of traditional trekkers has come down. However, a large number of devotees from Tamil Nadu follow this route.
Erumeli Pettathullal is the universal form of the people power against injustice, injustice and violence. Ayyan Ayyappan, who killed Mahishi and established Dharma, created emotional unity and movement among the people.
