The setting where it all began was a small farming community on the border between Tennessee and Kentucky, dotted with cornfields bent by the wind and deep valleys where the light always lingered. Thornridge Hollow was nothing more than a junction of four dirt roads, a store, two reinforced log cabins, and the old shed where the Thornridge brothers—Elias and Merritt—kept their tools, harnesses, and supplies.
It was a modest place, but known for the reliability of those two men who, according to records and testimonies, maintained a reputation for being discreet, hardworking, and respected. Elias Thornridge, the eldest, is described in the local pastor's notes as “a man of soft speech and measured steps.” Merritt, on the other hand, was more outgoing, but equally reserved about his personal life.
