Omega Planet Ocean Chronograph: If the Rolex Deepsea and Omega Speedmaster Had a Baby

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is a serious dive watch for seriously large wrists. And the Planet Ocean Chronograph is larger still. Is this watch as close as the world will ever get to a Rolex Deepsea Chronograph? Tim Mosso reviews this Omega and a host of preowned luxury watches today on “Wake Up with Watches!”

Omega Seamaster dive watches have been an industry point of reference since the first CK2913 Seamaster 300 of 1957. The Omega Planet Ocean collection arrived in 2005, and today’s Planet Ocean Chronograph is from the latest batch of Omega models. At 45.5mm in stainless steel, this Planet Ocean isn’t for the slight of wrist or the bashful. But if you have the arm size for this chronograph, it’s hard to find a better option at this or even higher prices.

Stainless steel may be the material of choice for this Planet Ocean 600M, but the bezel insert pops in exuberant orange ceramic. That unidirectional diving bezel is fully lumed, and it encircles a matte grey dial of solid titanium.

Omega includes a steel bracelet with a dive clasp, and that clasp includes two different sizing systems. The first sizing option is a push-button slider that permits minor tailoring of fit. The second option is a classic fold-out dive extension for use over a diving suit. Diving is enabled by case water resistance of 600 meters with a helium gas escape valve for saturation divers

Omega Master Chronometer caliber 9900 provides the beating heart of this diving watch. With automatic winding and 60 hours of power reserve, reliability is assured. The METAS chronometer certification further assures a high standard of chronometry, anti-magnetism, shock resistance, power reserve, winding efficiency, and water resistance. A vertical clutch and column wheel mechanism control the chronograph. Each caliber 9900 includes a special feature that permits independent movement of the hour hand for owners who travel frequently. Omega’s antimagnetic escapement and Si14 silicon hairspring protect the movement from magnetic fields of over 15,000 gauss.
