Researchers at NC State have released the first-ever report on microplastics in North Carolina waterways — and the findings are alarming. Tiny plastic fragments from Styrofoam, polystyrene, runoff, wastewater and litter are flooding rivers and streams, infiltrating the food and water supply. Scientists warn the damage may already be irreversible, putting ecosystems and human health at risk.
